| Inlay of Soldier with Prisoner, shell, Mari, Early Dynastic,
2400 BCE From the Early Dynastic - Northern Mesopotamian Period, 2900 BCE - 2350 BCE Found in Mari (Tell Hariri) The above fragment from Mari depicts a soldier pushing a naked prisoner while menacingly holding a spear. The inlay was created mosaic style using bitumen in which to inlay shell and other materials. The style is much like that of the contemporary Standard of Ur found in the Royal Cemetery at Ur.
